DIRT BIKE RIDING: Classic vintage racer and local Mud ‘n’ Tars rider Kerry Marsh recently took on the nation's best riders in a two-day shootout in Canberra to see who would be crowned Australia's Vintage Dirt Track Champion.
"Canberra was always going to be a long drive and a competitive national event, but it was always going to be worth it just for the chance to race against Australia's best," Kerry said.
"I have spent most of the 2008 SA Dirt Track series trying to sort out a pre-75 racer that would be competitive and I'm sure Itook my best game to Canberra.
"I made it through all the qualifying and heat races to make the finals in both my pre-75 vintage classes," Kerry said.
Sunday's finals pitted the best 12 high point riders in a four and a half lap final event with the winner taking all.
"I never expected to win, I just wanted to make the finals, to be there to mix it with the best," Kerry said.
His 1975 Hoey Suspension TM Suzuki 250cc ran consistently all weekend and qualified strongly to make the grid of the national finals but just couldn't quite match the pace of the methanol burning machines which made up the top places.
Riding in the all powers title on a Pitman's Yamaha MXa 360 he rode very strong all weekend and in the finals battled on to cross the line in a very respectable fifth place.
"I really want to thank all the guys and girls in the Mud 'n' Tars club who have always given me the confidence, enthusiasm and support to compete in this sport and was happy to get a result at this level that I could be proud of," Kerry said.
The final round of the SA Dirt Track state titles will be held at Days Road this Sunday September 28.
All your local riders including Ty lynch, who came third in the national junior titles recently, will be out to finish the year on a high and would really love to see the support of their local community.
"Come out, watch and enjoy some of Australia's best and enjoy a sausage from the canteen while you do it," Kerry said.
