NSW junior squad has local knowledge

24 Apr, 2009 01:00 AM
BORDER siblings Lucy and Jim Grills are hoping their local knowledge will prove decisive at the Australian Junior Polocrosse Championships, starting today at the Albury-Wodonga Equestrian Centre.

More than 300 competitors will be on the Border for the championships, hosted by the Albury-Holbrook Polocrosse Club.

Lucy and Jim will team up in the NSW junior squad, fresh from recently representing Australia at Test level.

This weekend’s event is the first nationwide junior tournament of its kind, with the polocrosse club hosting several Tri-State Cups in the past.

But the sport’s rise in popularity has seen the Polocrosse Association of Australian throw its support behind the Border club in hosting every Australian state and a New Zealand contingent.

The championships have been preceded by junior coaching clinics held at the club yesterday and Wednesday.

These classes covered a wide range of horsemanship including basic riding skills, polocrosse and campdrafting.

“It is very exciting,” polocrosse club president Gordon Shaw said yesterday.

“We’ve had a fantastic response — a record number of teams.

“And the junior coaching clinics are almost the best part of it all, helping with the sport’s promotion and junior development.”

The championships are free for spectators with action getting under way from 8am.
