Previously the largest number on the 14km training run was 106 but National Altitude Training Centre head coach Nic Bideau said Falls Creek is continuing to grow as a destination for international and Australian athletes.
”We are getting the numbers there are more athletes up here than I’ve ever seen before,” he said.
“There are Koreans, runners from all over Australia, and next week a couple from Ireland and two British guys will be attending the National Altitude Training Centre.
“It is freezing in Europe at present and all the athletes in Europe wish they were here.
“This is the best place in Australia — it would not cost the earth to make it the No.1 pick for everyone.
“Currently there’s a number of our up-and-coming, exciting talents training at Falls Creek who are on the verge of the next step.
“The younger runners such as Ryan Gregson, who has broken numerous Australian records, will learn a lot from being around world-class athletes such as Collis Birgingham and Geoff Riles.”
Traditionally the “water tank run” is one of the planned training runs which attracts athletes of all abilities.
It starts in the heart of Falls Creek and the halfway point of the 14km session is the mile-high water tank on Rocky Valley Lake.
