AN old saying goes something along the lines of there are three types of lies: lies, damn lies and statistics.
And one startling statistic from last weekend’s O and M matches had several inside and outside The Border Mail offices scratching their heads.
Many simply couldn’t believe Jon McCormick’s effort to rack up 22 touches and three goals in the first quarter of Wangaratta’s win against North Albury last Saturday.
The Border Mail fielded several calls early in the week questioning the legitimacy of McCormick’s first-quarter stats, including one O and M coach, who, at the end of a football-related conversation, let it slip he watched a video of the game to double-check the accuracy of the statistics.
“I got my hands on the tape and thought I’d see how many touches McCormick really got,” the coach said.
“And I couldn’t believe it — he got exactly 22 possessions in that first quarter.
“The most amazing thing was he also used the ball so well — 19 of them hit the target.
“It was a fair effort.”
And who said statistics weren’t accurate?
