Magpies end 13 year drought

16/09/2008 10:31:00 AM
For the first time since 1991, Glen Innes Magpies are the Group 19 A Grade premiers following their stirring 26 - 10 victory over Tingha.

And in an added bonus, the Under 18s completed their 2008 season undefeated after a narrow 10 - 6 win over a gallant Inverell, to give the Magpies two premierships and ensure that the year of the Centenary of Rugby League will always be remembered in Glen Innes.

Although marred by controversy that caused a premature and disappointing end to the match, Glen’s top grade performance was outstanding.

The Magpies opened brightly with a neat break to winger Nick Ehsman that looked like a certain try in the first minute only to be recalled for a forward pass. But barely a minute later Tingha winger Tod Prince scored in the western corner in front of a huge group of Tiger supporters. Will Jerrard landed a superb conversion in the driving rain for an early 6 - 0 lead.

Glen made a couple of breaks which failed to bring points but a penalty to Glen after Ehsman was dragged into touch after the tackle was completed saw Glen work to mid-field and Jake Chard forge a path through the ruck to score near the posts. Sam Key’s conversion levelled the scores.

In the 25th minute, Jason Ferris broke clear from a scrum set in Glen’s half. His long pass to winger James Sheridan was superb and Sheridan finished off in great style wide out. Glen 10 - 6.

Three minutes later, Aaron Jones’ short kick saw fullback Mark Muggleton re-gather and break a nice run. Ankle-tapped and knocked to the ground, Muggleton got the ball back to Key who found Arthur Latham and the 38 year old playing his final game, darted across for a great try. Key converted for 16 - 6.

Right on half-time, Glen missed a golden opportunity when Key and Jones combined to set up a great chance but the final pass to Mitch Berridge was dropped.

Just two minutes into the second half, Sheridan soared above his opponent to reel in a towering Ferris bomb and plant the ball over the line. Glen 20 - 6.

All game long, Glen’s short kicking game in the slippery conditions had put Tingha under pressure and in the 55th minute it produced maximum points.

Jones chased a grubber kick through and the last line of Tingha defence spilled the ball. Lock Jamie Watts neatly plucked the ball out of the slush and charged 35 minutes to cross in the corner. The Tingha defence had dropped off and Watts was able to bring the ball around under the posts for the simple conversion. Glen 26 - 6.

Four minutes later, Tingha’s Justin McIlwain scored out wide to narrow the gap slightly but Glen was soon back on the attack. Ferris made a neat break and was tackled by Paul Leitinger. Ferris played the ball but then he and Leitinger began trading blows. Players from both sides became involved in the melee as Watts raced across under the posts.

When order was restored, Leitinger was sin-binned by referee Peter Watt. Two cans were thrown onto the field and Tingha claimed one of the cans struck a Tigers player, although plenty of Glen players say he sustained the injury during the brawl.

Tingha left the field and the referee called the game. Tigers players did not attend the presentation of trophies.

The incident is currently under investigation by Group 19 Management committee. Plenty of videos were in operation at the time and the hope is that one of them will be able to identify the culprit or culprits.

Jason Ferris and Sam Key had outstanding games for Glen as did Jamie Watts who won the official Player of the Grand Final award. Glen’s forwards dominated the ruck area in the heavy conditions with Dave Stanfield, Shad Bailey and Jake Chard making good ground throughout. James Sheridan was excellent while Mark Muggleton was his usual dependable self and made several high pressure takes under the high ball.

Along with a number of Glen Innes ex pats now living in other parts of the state, let me say congratulations to the A Grade & Under 18's for their success in the grand finals. Considering it is Rugby League's centenary, winning in such comprehensive fashion can do wonders for the game & the town. Well done Magpies.
