Albury goes down fighting in finals

21 Jan, 2012 12:00 AM
ALBURY just failed to win both men’s sections at NSW Country Week yesterday after falling at the final hurdle to Far South Coast 1 in the top division.

The Border outfit of Josh Graetz, Harrison Macpherson-Wood and Cameron Scholz proved no match for the visitors in the heat at Albury Grasscourts, going down four sets to one in the men’s Division 1 teams event final.

Albury put up a brave fight in the fifth set, with singles winner Graetz and fellow youngster Macpherson-Wood pushing Oliver Batten and John Gardiner to a tie-breaker.

Batten said his side was happy to get over the line.

“It was a tough one to finish with,” the 17-year-old said.

“They had a really good comeback but it was good to get through in the end.”

Batten said his side was confident going into the decider after they didn’t lose a match during the five-day tournament.

“We’d had a win against them before so we were confident,” he said.

“They had a change in team and were fairly strong so it was good to get over the line in the end in the heat.

“We always knew we would have a bit of a chance at winning the tournament considering we’d brought over a strong team.”

But Albury didn’t go home empty-handed, with Alison Tinworth’s side winning the women’s Division 1 final by four sets against Nepean.
