Border-based players line up to make trek to Swan Hill

08 Feb, 2012 12:00 AM
ALMOST 100 players from the Border and surrounding districts have entered next week’s Country Week in Swan Hill.

Ten teams from Albury-Wodonga, some with as many as six players per team, have entered the five-day tournament which starts on Monday at Swan Hill Lawn Tennis Club.

Teams from Jindera, Walwa-Jingellic, Yarrawonga, Hay and Hume have also entered the annual event, while the Wangaratta Lawn Tennis Club will send approximately 40 players.

One of the local outfits hoping to do well is Sandra Allen’s Wodonga Whiskas, which is in the women’s Special B2 division.

Allen, who hasn’t missed the tournament in 27 years, will be joined by Helen Milton, Fran Ellis, Anne Albert and Kendall Oates, while Wendy Wolter has been ruled out with injury.

Allen said her side was hoping to make the finals against Albury-Glenly, Albury-Wodonga Rubies, Bendigo Team Bwain, Leongatha Red, Mount Prospect Dashers, Swan Hill Twisters and Tongala.

“We are hoping to go through and win it,” she said.

“We got to the semi-finals last year but we had a lot of injuries.”

Allen said the secret to the team’s success was friendship.
