DESPITE a slow start to NSW Country Week, Albury Diggers remain hopeful of scraping into the finals at the Albury Grasscourts.
One of two Border sides in the division 1 men’s doubles teams event, the Diggers are tied for fifth on the seven-team table and captain Ken Reid said they had their work cut out if they wanted to progress to the final four.
“We thought if we could win two, possibly three matches, then we will probably finish fourth and scrape into the finals,” Reid said yesterday.
“We’ve won one and lost two and hopefully we can win another one or two, but it’s pretty good competition.”
The top four qualify for tomorrow’s semi-finals, with the final now scheduled for Friday morning.
The other Albury team, the Warriors, is second and looks guaranteed a spot in the semis.
Far South Coast 1, led by John Gardiner, defeated the Diggers by a whopping six sets yesterday and leads the standings.
In the women’s section, the sole Albury side, led by captain Alison Tinworth, hasn’t lost a match in the four-team pool.
Tinworth is one of just three in the open women’s singles, which is now a round-robin format.
Only 17 teams have entered the tournament, down from 22 last year.
