ALBURY’S Josh Graetz has coasted into today’s NSW Country Week men’s open singles final after disposing of Oliver Batten 6-1 6-1 in yesterday’s semi-final.
His opponent will be Merimbula’s 19-year-old John Gardiner who had to fight hard to get through his semi-final against Rob Baddeley.
Gardiner’s 4-6 6-3 10-8 victory was his first semi-final win at the NSW Country Cup after contesting the event in previous years.
He said he was happy with the way he was able to come back from a set down to clinch the match.
“I lost the first set but I came back well in the second and stuck in,” Gardiner said.
“I was up 5-0 in the second and (Baddeley) managed to pull it back to 5-3 but I was able to hold my serve to win the set.
“The third set was a marathon but I knew I could get him mentally.”
“It went a long time but I was confident I could wear him down.”
Talking after yesterday’s semi-final victory, Gardiner said he was looking forward to his clash with Graetz.
“I’m very confident and I’m looking forward to it,” Gardiner said.
“I haven’t seen him before at all so I don’t know what to expect.”
In today’s open women’s final Alison Tinworth will play the South Coast’s Gabby Beaumont.
In yesterday’s special singles final Michael Reid was too good for Albury’s Ashley Wurtz, taking the match 6-1.
The division 1 men’s and women’s team double finals will be decided today with four semi-finals set to take place.
