ALBURY adoptee Jarmila Groth was booted out of the US Open by Maria Shaparova this morning, but not before giving the former world no.1 a massive scare.
Groth, wife of Border product Sam Groth, appeared on the brink of causing an opening-round upset when she blasted past Sharapova 6-4 in the opening set.
But the 14th seed and Russian superstar showed why she is regarded one of the most tenacious fighters on the world circuit by hitting back with vehemence.
Sharapova overcame Groth's bold challenges to claim the second set 6-3 and then breezed through to the second round by winning the third set 6-1.
