Tere-Apisah cruises to championship victory

16 Jan, 2012 12:00 AM
RISING tennis star Marcia Tere-Apisah put the disappointment of losing the Margaret Court Cup final behind her after victory in the Wodonga Grasscourt Championships yesterday.

The Papua New Guinean proved far too strong for fourth seed Katerina Valos, winning the women’s final 6-2 6-0.

Quietly spoken Tere-Apisah, who has just accepted a US college scholarship to Georgia State where her sister Abigail studies, said she was happy with her form throughout her two weeks on the Border.

“I got better in every match so I’m happy to win the tournament,” she said.

“It was a good match for me (the final).

“I was fairly confident.”

Third seed Tere-Apisah didn’t lose a set at Wodonga until her semi-final against Tarani Kamone, with the 16-year-old scraping to a 6-4 3-6 7-6 win.

Valos moved into the decider after defeating local hope and sixth seed Alyssa Savill 6-1 6-3 in their semi.

Tere-Apisah will now turn her attention to New Zealand, where she is playing in three tournaments.

She said her next big goal was the Australian Open juniors.
