Unique event seeks players

01 Feb, 2012 12:00 AM
VETERAN players from the Border and surrounding districts are gearing up for next week’s 15th annual Ben Seth Memorial at Wodonga Tennis Centre.

The unique combined age doubles tournament will be held next Thursday.

Tournament organiser Jim Lannan said he was hoping for 50 entries and had been surprised with the amount of interest in the 130-plus group.

“The most entries I’ve got so far are for the 130-plus,” Lannan said yesterday.

“We’ve got a reasonable number of entries so far but we want more.”

The combined age categories for men are 90-plus (Wayne Bedella Memorial), 110-plus (Comined Age), 120-plus (Ross McMillan Memorial) and 130-plus (Ben Seth Memorial).

For the women they are 90-plus (Combined Age), 110-plus (Margot Murnane Memorial) and 125-plus (Lillian Matton Memorial).

Players must be 35 or older at December 31 this year.

Entries, which close on Tuesday, are $20 and include a light meal after play and a raffle.

In order to beat the heat, the tournament will be run from 4.30pm-8.30pm.

Ben Seth was a long-time tennis player and administrator on the Border and was a regular at veteran tournaments.

Entries can be made by contacting Lannan by phone on (02) 6059 1818.
