INTERNATIONAL Women’s Day highlights the achievements of women around the world but you don’t have to look across oceans to witness worthwhile work.
Christine O’Brien is an example of dedication on the Border, a transport director who devotedly went about raising money to help the Rehe children who were orphaned through a car accident last year.
Her efforts resulted in $65,000 being amassed to assist Abbie and Eddie, left without their parents Tex and Robyn.
But it is not only her work on that fundraising night, which saw items such as signed guitars from big name bands Silverchair and Powderfinger being auctioned off, that has seen Mrs O’Brien lauded.
She has helped her school community at Border Christian College and looked after people staying in her residence, citing the adage “charity begins at home”.
Mrs O’Brien is a shining example that women have an abundance of qualities to offer our community and their efforts are worth proclaiming.
Indeed International Women’s Day will celebrate its 100th birthday next year with the occasion having been first agreed to in Copenhagen in 1911.
