CONGRATULATIONS to the organisers and the huge crowd that granted their wish for 1400 people to come together on the Border yesterday to urge governments to provide the money for a Border cancer centre.
The crowd that bought all 1400 ponchos before yesterday’s rally got under way is indicative of what organiser Eric Turner says is a community willing to tell its story, time and time again, until they are listened to.
So many of those at yesterday’s rally had stories to tell about their own experiences with cancer, or they have had loved ones or friends with the disease.
While grateful for the standard of care they have received on the Border, many are forced to seek treatment in Melbourne, further upsetting both them and their families at a time when they need all the support they can get.
Politicians need to realise this is an issue that will not go away; in fact within 10 to 15 years there will be many more than the 1400 people now diagnosed with cancer each year on the Border.
And the community will not go away; it will persist with this fight.
As evidenced by all of those people, both old and young, who attended yesterday’s rally, this is a fight we must win.
