Events well supported

BORDER residents have again proven their resilience with almost unbelievable turnouts at the many events during the long weekend in Victoria.

Even the threat of a tempest couldn’t keep them indoors.

In a 72-hour stretch that delivered a month’s worth of rain, the gourmands, punters, sports lovers and families turned out in force and with little or no regard to the threat of flooding and hail.

To be fair the weather gods played their part, too.

Somehow sandwiched between the deluges was almost 24 hours without rain.

It was enough to see the Tastes of Rutherglen enjoy a record day’s sales, a huge crowd at Wodonga’s Carnivale and fashions on the field at the Towong picnic races.

Then almost 1000 people braved the deluge yesterday for the Mitta Muster, more than 130 took part in the Cumberoona run in Albury and 1800 cyclists were undeterred in their 230km tour of the high country.

The weekend was also a credit to the organisers of a showcase of events that highlighted the region’s attractions.

Despite the rain no one was complaining — there was no need to.
