SUSSAN Ley is not just Liberal candidate for Farrer but shadow assistant treasurer in Tony Abbott’s team.
If the Coalition wins on August 21, she will be in the next government and deservedly so.
While the federal result is still unpredictable, Ms Ley’s fourth victory in Farrer is assured.
Only a political earthquake could see a Liberal loss in the seat.
Ms Ley’s seven challengers are mostly conservative in outlook and she’ll get their preferences.
Her main opponent, Labor’s Christian Emmery, represents “the other side”, namely the Gillard government.
Rumblings of discontent among farmers suggest minor candidates will steal some Ley votes but none can really hope for more than a few percentage points.
At best, they might make Ms Ley think twice in future about some issues sensitive to farmers.
On the other hand, isn’t it best to have an MP who honestly speaks his or her mind?
Few MPs run with only single issues and, indeed, each MP must handle a broad spectrum of local, national and world issues.
In that context, who can hope to please everybody?
