Major steps on rubbish

01 Feb, 2012 12:00 AM
BORDER ratepayers are about to see major changes in the way household food waste is collected with the introduction of a charge for a weekly organics collection in Albury and Wodonga.

And one of the major changes for the region will be the development of a composting centre at Gerogery.

Significantly, Greater Hume Council is yet to receive a development application for the centre and its exact location is still to be determined.

The proposed changes to household food waste are already attracting plenty of comment after Albury Council endorsed a 12-year, $4.2 million contract from next year.

The councils would do well to listen to what ratepayers say about how garbage collection should work to encourage maximum recycling under the new arrangements.

It may be that the Albury Council should reconsider its planned fortnightly recyclables collection and make it more frequent in order to encourage greater use, rather than having people put their recyclables in their regular rubbish when they run out of room.

Educating householders is vital to ensure the maximum use is made of all services.
