SCHOOL students might use all the high technology available for lessons but it doesn’t say too much for the 21st century if their classrooms are cold.
The NSW Government has woken up to the fact that some parts of the state have shivering winters but some of the heating methods used are unsatisfactory.
One consequence is that the 800 or so students at Murray High School in Lavington will see their 76 unflued heaters replaced in time for next winter.
Schools at Springdale Heights, Rosewood, Khancoban and Tumbarumba will have similar replacements.
Education Minister Verity Firth has recognised that the unflued heaters have raised respiratory health concerns.
It seems the schools affected best cope with such concerns by opening windows to let in fresh air.
But that also lets in the cold.
The program to replace the heaters is long overdue and member for Albury Greg Aplin is naturally pleased his lobbying has paid off.
The move comes as work proceeds on Nation Building federal projects that have put millions into Border schools, including $200,000 to Murray and $1.65 million to Springdale Heights.
