Night football a good move

27 Aug, 2010 01:00 AM
THE Ovens and Murray Football League decision to at least consider playing its grand final at night is a commendable step in the right direction.

A grand final under lights won’t happen next year.

But with two of the league’s premier grounds in the Lavington Oval and Wangaratta Showgrounds being brought up to a level where they will have AFL-standard lighting, then opportunity knocks loudly.

The O and M must schedule a finals match under lights next year and test the waters whether the move will be embraced by the public.

More games involving as many clubs as possible have to be played during the home-and-away rounds under lights.

That is so teams are able to experience the difference between day and night footy.

The other plus with the lighting upgrades is regular AFL preseason games will be played at Lavington and Wangaratta.

We might never have our own AFL team but with two excellent venues, we can at least see footy at the highest level on a more regular basis than what we have become accustomed to in recent years.
