VIOLENCE at nightspots around Australia has drawn significant public interest in recent times, prompting the introduction by state governments of new rules aimed at curbing alcohol consumption.
Owners and operators are understandably upset when their venue is included on a list of trouble spots and their notoriety increases for all the wrong reasons.
But these lists have also prompted changes in rules at individual nightspots which often lead to a subsequent decline in the number of assaults and better behaviour among venue patrons.
Most Albury licensees have been proactive, through the local liquor accord, in addressing problems with alcohol service and consumption and have introduced initiatives which have helped to stem the incidence of violence.
But the task is not over and while it might be unfavourable to be included on the list of violent venues, it does serve to reinforce how responsible service of alcohol might continue to be addressed.
Rob Malone from Albury’s Roi bar is correct in saying many of the restrictions in the new system have already been adopted by many venues, including Roi.
It will require ongoing diligence by licensees and a conversation with the community to keep venues off the list.
