Salute one, salute all

DETECTIVE Sgt Peter Revell this week marked 40 years in the Victorian police force, more than half of that at the head of Wodonga’s criminal investigation unit.

His career as a detective has included investigations into a range of crimes.

Some cases have stood out, either because of the circumstances involved or because they remain unsolved.

Others have offered him great satisfaction in terms of solving a question or problem and giving the victims a sense of justice having been served.

Sgt Revell points out how modern technology has had a greater hand in helping to solve crime, and perhaps most importantly, he is at pains to confirm the value of having a good team to meet the demands of those investigations.

The abundance of television crime programs, particularly those from the US, means the general public often fails to understand the complexity of policing and in particular, criminal investigation work.

What’s certain is that detective work isn’t nearly as glamourous as those programs might portray.

The experience held by long-term police officers, such as Sgt Revell, is of great benefit to our community.
