Skipping jury is shameful

02 Feb, 2012 12:00 AM
SHAME on the people who didn’t turn up for jury service in Albury yesterday.

A criminal trial was held over because too few prospective jurors answered the official summons.

As a result, there was a further delay in proceedings for two accused, their legal teams and prosecuting authorities.

The jury lies at the heart of our criminal justice system.

If it can’t work properly in one case, it not only inconveniences all parties but other scheduled criminal and civil cases.

Centres such as Albury, Wagga and Griffith are privileged to be able to host District Court sittings.

It’s a way each community gets to see the justice system at work, on local cases that might otherwise go to Sydney, and to actually take part in it.

To create a jury of 12, six times that number are called because some will be ruled out.

Absentees face a potential fine of $1100 if they can’t produce genuine and sincere reasons.

What happened yesterday due to some “who cares” people put the city and district in a bad light.

The sheriff’s office should pursue those “missing persons” with vigour because they have let everyone down.
