Standard road rules essential

16 Aug, 2010 01:00 AM
THE results of a recent targeted police operation in Albury are indicative of the need for politicians to push harder for the standardisation of road rules between NSW and Victoria.

Highway patrol officers are spending a considerable amount of their time each day educating drivers who are unfamiliar with rules in the other state, particularly in relation to restrictions on L- and P-plate drivers.

But the discrepancy between the states extends to drivers on full licences, including rules on U-turns at intersections.

While the onus is on the driver to be aware of road rules, surely standardised road rules would give drivers living on the Border better opportunity to ensure they were doing the right thing.

The frequency of cross-border travel by local residents ensures that it would be near impossible to be familiar with rule differences every single time they drove between Albury and Wodonga.

Police are forced to spend an increasing amount of time dealing with those confused by the differences or incorrectly informed.

Surely, standardising the rules would give police greater opportunity to tend to those who are flagrantly disobeying the road rules or are involved in more serious offences.
