 Take care on slippery roads

Take care on slippery roads

17 Aug, 2010 01:00 AM
HOW many times do police have to ask drivers to slow down and drive to the road conditions?

North East police booked three drivers within 30 minutes on a stretch of the Great Alpine Road at the weekend, during an operation targeting those travelling to and from the snowfields.

Given the dangerous road conditions at the weekend, including persistent rain, police should hardly have to urge drivers to slow down, particularly those travelling with young family members.

Rather than hurrying to get to their destinations, drivers must slow down to ensure the safety of not only themselves but other motorists.

A planned holiday to the snow will be remembered for all the wrong reasons should motorists be involved in a collision or forced off the road in slippery conditions.

Police say motorists should heed the speed zone signs and also ensure they appropriately use equipment, such as fog lights.

They must also carry snow chains; not taking this most simple of precautions will cost them dearly.

Drivers have been warned; if they speed they will be caught by police, who will target drivers across the region throughout the remainder of the season.
