GATEWAY Island, between Albury and Wodonga, is the ideal place to hold large events with its position ensuring it is central to both cities.
The Wodonga Council has realised this with its development of Gateway Lakes on the western side of Lincoln Causeway to host major events.
The venue will get its first test this weekend with the car jamboree Chryslers on the Murray to be held there after an itinerant history which has seen it held at Noreuil, Oddies Creek and Belvoir parks across Albury and Wodonga.
The council has developed irrigation and electricity at the site and admits further work is needed with the sealing of its entry point, Lemke Road, and a new toilet block on the drawing board.
There are also concerns about the speed limit on Lincoln Causeway with approaches being made to VicRoads to have it reduced from 80kmh to coincide with functions at Gateway Lakes.
Chryslers on the Murray will be a litmus test for these issues but clearly, with 70,000sq m of space, Gateway Lakes has ample capacity for such events.
Now it is up to the public to see if it is embraced and how it can build on its natural geographic advantage.
