Time to end library saga

17 Aug, 2010 01:00 AM
LAVINGTON was just a collection of mostly residential streets intersected by the Hume Highway when a Woolworths supermarket opened on an old orchard 31 years ago.

The suburb now houses more than 12,000 people and that supermarket is just part of the Border’s largest shopping mall.

But Griffith Road is yet to develop into a “main street” despite the council’s street improvements in recent years.

That will change if Zauner Construction goes ahead with its six-storey building and new shops.

These will be built next to where Doctors at Lavington are creating a modern medical centre from an old store.

The council this year adopted a Lavington master plan to guide the changes.

But it has been slow to decide the future of the Lavington library and it’s still uncertain if it will go to the Zauner building.

A clear majority of councillors chose the Zauner building as the preferred location four months ago.

With a major company willing to show its faith in the suburb’s future, it’s reasonable to expect the council to end the two-year saga of debating the future of a library that is clearly too small in its present location.
