Worthy cause needs support

EDUCATION is vital for every child, with literacy and numeracy integral skills for jobs of all descriptions.

Some students need more than just the lessons provided by schools and benefit from extra tuition.

That is where Wodonga’s Homework Club fits in, enabling struggling boys and girls to improve their English and maths talents.

Sadly the club, which has been operating since 2008, is facing extinction unless $25,000 can be found by the end of the month.

Previously various companies and the Myer Foundation have helped fund the service which operates from a truck supplied by the Upper Murray Regional Library service.

It is disappointing such a worthwhile operation cannot find donors or sponsors at this stage and the organisers have to resort to a public appeal for funds.

This is an opportunity for politicians to step forward and broker a deal.

Surely within the Victorian or Federal Governments’ massive budgets there is room for $25,000 to help battling students.

The long-term benefits should ensure it’s an investment worth making and the social wellbeing is a dividend worth pursuing.
