REGARDING your article on page 11 of The Border Mail (August 17), “Doubt cast on helmets” concerning mandatory bicycle helmet laws.
Helmets should not be discarded.
I was a cyclist and raced in the 1950s and recommend that this mandatory law be kept in place.
Forget the stats; just wear a helmet and survive.
I was competing in a road race and fell doing 60km/h which resulted in a fractured skull with 40 stitches ensuing and spent one month in hospital.
Had I been wearing a helmet, my face would not have the scars I bear to this day.
To all bike riders: Don’t stop wearing your helmets and stay alive.
