Informal votes make parties pay

30 Aug, 2010 01:00 AM
DID you know that for every first preference vote cast for a major party, that party gets a donation from the taxpayer of more than $2.30?

At present counting for the House of Representatives alone, the Labor and Liberal/National parties have so far creamed off more than $24.3 million of taxpayers’ funds. (They will end up with more than $40 million by the end of the election.)

When an informal vote is cast, no party or candidate gets anything.

Guess why it is illegal to encourage anyone to vote informal.
