I’M writing to you about your front page last week outlining the jobs that could be lost at Moore Paragon.
This is yet another blow to jobs and to our community as a whole.
But there is a real human side to this.
The Border Mail recently covered a story on a little sick boy named Tyler who had his collection tins stolen.
He is a very sick kid and his family has been through so much.
His dad works for Moore Paragon, his mum is sick as well and the family is already in financial difficulties.
I don’t know this boy or his mum and dad but my heart goes out to them.
I found out about Tyler’s problems at an AMWU district committee meeting last week where a group of union members from many factories meet monthly to discuss work and community issues.
All of us were struck by the story of this little boy that was told to us by a work colleague of his father and we want to help.
His dad hasn’t asked for help but as a member of our union we feel obliged to do whatever we can.
We understand that many families will be affected by possible job cuts but I feel this family has had their fair share of bad luck.
I call on all AMWU members all union member and all members of the community to spare a thought and maybe some spare change for this little boy.
If you wish to donate there are tins around town and at the union office, suite 3, 4 Stanley Street, Wodonga.
Also if you are at the Albury Gold Cup, look for our banner behind the grandstand; we will be collecting money for Tyler there as well.
Put your political views aside and think of the humanity of job losses and how it really affects people and communities.
A trade union is just a group of mums and dads working towards a better future for Australia.
We want companies to do well so we have job security, and most of all we look out for our mates.
