I AM writing about the article entitled “Bitter End” (The Border Mail, January 21).
This article left me gob-smacked.
Getting behind the wheel of a car after consuming 70 standard drinks is bad enough.
Surely the driver would have had to know he was too intoxicated to drive, given the “facts”’ as the paper reported.
The thing that really got me going was the solicitor’s defence. The solicitor brought in his client’s record, his workplace and his football club.
“He’s a footy coach, with leadership skills, go easy on him” the solicitor seemed to say.
Are these the off-field skills we want to promote in our clubs?
I spend a fair bit of time with sporting clubs in an attempt to modify behaviour, to moderate the use of alcohol and ensure a safe and healthy environment.
This is not the stuff footy legends are made of, in my opinion.
