Mass murder charges

07 Feb, 2012 02:00 AM

ALLEGED Indonesian terrorist Umar Patek will face six charges, including mass murder, in relation to the 2002 Bali bombings.

Prosecutors handed over a 50-page indictment yesterday to the West Jakarta District Court, where Patek is expected to face trial later this month.

Authorities have been working on the case since Patek's extradition from Pakistan last August. He has allegedly admitted to a role in the Bali bombings. He is charged with premeditated murder over the nightclub attacks in 2002 that killed 202 people, including 88 Australians.

The murder charges will extend to a series of bombings of churches in a number of Indonesian cities on Christmas Eve, 2000, and will carry the death penalty.

Other charges include conspiracy to commit terrorism and illegal possession of firearms and explosives.
