The 57-year-old was riding at Hotham Heights with two friends about 1.30pm when police believe he fell from his motorbike as he travelled around a sweeping bend.
He then slid across the asphalt on to the other side of the road where he was struck by an oncoming four-wheel-drive, dying at the scene.
His friend, also in his late 50s, witnessed the incident, which caused him to brake and fall off his bike.
The Beechworth man received minor injuries and was taken to Wangaratta Hospital.
The three occupants in the four-wheel-drive were not injured while a third motorcyclist travelling with the group was in front of the other riders and did not see the crash.
The fatality is the second motorcycle death on the Border in five days.
A 22-year-old Albury man was killed after he was struck by two cars during a suspected high-speed crash in Lavington on Wednesday.
A report will be prepared for the coroner.
