Emergency services converged on the scene, which was not far from the town’s hospital.
It is believed the rupture was caused by a backhoe in a car park in Charles Street, near the intersection of Broadway Street.
The CFA and police door-knocked residents within the affected area, advising themto take shelter indoors immediately.
The hospital is on standby for a possible evacuation, but the CFA says it is not required at this stage.
The leak was deemed safe by about 12:30pm.
Roads were closed in the area.
