I ALWAYS thought that to go to confession in church you went to confess your sins (“Forgive me Father for I have sinned”) not to confess to crimes, a different thing altogether.

A sin is against the church and the 10 commandments; a crime is against the laws of the land and society.
Child abuse is a crime so should not be absolved by the church.
Priests would not be betraying a member but reporting a crime.
