Tallangatta police were alerted to the male primary school teacher, 39, driving erratically along the Murray Valley Highway on Wednesday afternoon.
Sen-Constable Anthony James said when police stopped the man, he produced a blood alcohol reading of 0.187.
The driver had been heading towards Tallangatta in a green Mazda sedan when he was pulled over at Darbyshire, west of Koetong about 4.30pm.
Sen-Constable James said the man, a primary school teacher from Kew East in Melbourne, offered no excuse for his behaviour but admitted to drinking a two-litre flagon of sherry.
The man’s licence was immediately suspended and he was ordered to face Wodonga Court on January 15.
