Albury police Inspector Matt Tishler said at 5pm a car carrying five men ran off the north-bound lane of the Hume Freeway, 10km south of Holbrook.
He said the car collided with a tree and the front sear passenger was killed. The driver and three backseat passengers were taken to the Albury Base Hospital by ambulance.
