Medium-pacer Thomson finished with 6-26 off 15 overs in Saturday’s 31-run win at Baarmutha Park. He now has 20 wickets, two more than Rutherglen United’s Ben Gartside.
Richie Worcester took 3-26 to take his count to 16 as Wanderers put themselves in the top three.
Beechworth skipper Brenton Surrey, who used seven bowlers , said Thomson and Worcester had bowled in the right areas.
“He (Thomson) was lucky enough to get the edges, where as Richie beat the bat,” Surrey said.
“I wouldn’t say he bowled any better than Richie.
“As a group, we bowled well.
“We held the catches for him and dropped a couple off Richie.”
Chasing 173, Colts managed only 141, with skipper Kent Braden top-scoring with 34 before Surrey caught him off the bowling of Worcester.
Young keeper-batsman Mitchell Giggins contributed 27 at No.6, while Scott Clayton finished unbeaten on 19.
“Probably the dangerous partnership was Kent and Scotty Clayton,” Surrey said.
“Getting Kent put a bit of pressure on the lower order which we used to our advantage.
“Things weren’t going as we would have liked but it was a matter of hanging in there.
“It was probably the worst we’ve fielded all year.”
Beechworth travels to Bruck and hosts Greta before Christmas.
The skipper couldn’t be happier with the club’s position.
“We made a bit of an aim to start the season well,” Surrey said yesterday.
“In previous years, we’ve had to make up points late in the year.”
“There’s a bit of work to do yet but it’s better to be up there than have to make up points late.”
