Dozens of sheep were killed in the roll and dozens more injured animals had to be put down.
Several sheep became loose and ran towards the Hume Fwy, prompting police to temporarily close the freeway.
Lanes were re-opened soon after with a 40km/h speed limit while police, firefighters, SES, sheep dogs and other volunteers rounded-up the runaways.
Melrose Drive was blocked in both directions, preventing access to Wodonga train station for about an hour.
About 100 sheep survived and were mustered to a nearby paddock.
The cause of the accident is not yet known.
