About 400 orienteers headed into bushland near Chiltern for day 1 where they took about 90 minutes to complete the course.
Co-ordinator Warwick Williams said the North East boasted some of the nation’s best courses.
Among leading orienteers taking part are eight of the country’s top 10 men and six of its top 10 women.
It’s the first time the carnival has been staged in the area despite hosting the Australian Championships twice since 2002.
It will now move around bush near Eldorado, Yackandandah and Beechworth.
