THE give-way rule is likely to be forever burned into the memory of a Wodonga learner driver after a motorcyclist allegedly drove into the path of the family car yesterday.
Alyse Burns, 16, had clocked up only 10 hours of driving before the collision near Kookaburra Point, just before noon.
The Catholic College Wodonga student, her mother, Leeanne, and father, Darren, had driven to Lake Hume and were returning to Wodonga along Bonegilla Road at Ebden.
Sen-Constable David Young, from Wodonga police, said the motorcyclist, who was a visitor from Finland, was turning right onto Kookaburra Point Road with his daughter, 14, on the back of the bike.
The pair had planned to meet family at the nearby lakeside reserve.
But police will claim the 42-year-old failed to give way when turning off Bonegilla Road, driving straight into the path of the Burns’ SS Commodore.
The rider’s head smashed into the driver’s windscreen, showering Alyse with glass that became lodged in her legs.
He then hit the ground and was transported to Albury Base Hospital in a neck brace.
The motorcyclist’s daughter escaped with only minor injuries.
Mr Burns said it was lucky their daughter had been travelling at less than the 80 km/h speed limit.
“I saw the motorbike and I thought it’s not going to stop,” Mr Burns said.
Alyse, who was shaken, said she would continue her driving lessons.
It is likely police will charge the motorcyclist.
