SEVENTEEN Border and Riverina fire brigades joined strike teams assisting to control major fires in Tarcutta and Jerilderie.
The brigades, which included Lavington, Walla and Barooga, helped with back burning and mopping up at the Mates Gully fire in Tarcutta and the Moonbria Road fire at Jerilderie.
The crews returned to the Border on Thursday night, ahead of yesterday’s extreme fire day in the Riverina.
But Inspector Marg Wehner, of the NSW Rural Fire Service, said the forecast high winds never eventuated.
“We have been fortunate that we haven’t had things go wrong but we always have crews standing by ready to go,” she said.
