‘Tassie can bank on us’

BEECHWORTH residents have collected more than $1500 in three days for the Tasmanian bushfire appeal.

Community bank chairman Jamie Horne said the Beechworth and District branch kick started the appeal with $1000 as the community was well aware of the devastating effects of fire.

He said the branch had since received more than $500 in donations from the public.

“In the 2003 fires hear, this whole area was shrouded in smoke for the best part of 10 days,” he said.

“We can relate to the pressure Tasmania has been under.

“The more we can help out the better because it’s going to be a long road ahead for these people.”

“A lot of people have come in to the branch and given $10 to $50.”

“It’s a good community thing to do. It’s not our community but we’re in a position to help.”

Mr Horne encouraged residents to visit the bank and donate whatever they could.

“Every bit helps build that total,” he said.
