Close call for pair as hoon hits tree

A HOON driver smashed into a tree after creating a 70-metre burn-out on a Cobram road.

The impact hit the Holden Statesman centimetres from the passenger door, where an 18-year-old man was sitting.

Police said the 19-year-old driver’s car would be impounded.

“It’s fortunate it hit the front-passenger wheel rather than the passenger door,” Sen-Constable Bryce Tobias, from Cobram police, said.

“If he had hit the passenger door it might have been a whole lot different; he would be up for a lot more serious charges.”

A motorist alerted police to the car driving along Thompsons Beach Road, at 2am on Saturday.

Police found the car smashed into a large gum tree beside the road.

Sen-Constable Tobias said alcohol was not a factor.

The two men, from Cobram, were both uninjured.

“But there is a fine line between no injuries and fatal injuries sometimes,” Sen-Constable Tobias said.

The driver will be charged on summons with careless driving.
