A WOMAN dragged herself to safety before her car was engulfed in flames after a crash at Balldale on Tuesday night.
Police said the Thurgoona woman, 22, had lost control of her Toyota Camry and hit a tree on McGormans Lane at about 9pm when driving to her boyfriend’s house.
She suffered a compound fracture to her right leg when the car landed on its roof.
Insp David Cottee, of Albury, said she had dragged herself from the car before it burst into flames.
“She’s lucky she could get out of the car or she would have been incinerated,” Insp Cottee said. “The car was destroyed.”
After getting to safety, the woman could not get reception to call emergency services.
“She eventually got enough service and called three hours later,” Insp Cottee said.
He said no passers-by had seen the woman’s car, even though McGormans Lane leads to the busier Hopefield Road.
“It’s a quiet road but her car was on fire — you’d think someone might have seen that,” he said.”
The woman is in a serious but stable condition at Albury hospital.
