The Wandiligong man, 47, was riding through historic goldmining property The Diggings, off Centenary Avenue, when he saw smoke, about 9pm on Wednesday night.
The fire burned 10 square metres in the front yard of a house and the owners were not home.
Using a garden house, the man doused the flames and soon after a fire crew from Porepunkah arrived.
Leading Sen-Constable Tony Finlaw, of Bright police, praised the swift actions of the man, particularly as the Alpine area is already suffering a fire threat.
“If it wasn’t for him it could have been a lot worse,” he said.
“It was really his quick actions that stopped the fire from spreading.”
