“My eyes lit up and I remember thinking I wanted to be part of it,” he said.
The associate at Johnsons MME in Albury today receives the medal of the Order of Australia for his service to the community of Albury-Wodonga, particularly through the Australian Air Force Cadets.
“It’s a great honour and my involvement in the Australian Air Force Cadets goes all the way back to my days in Wagga,” he said.
He has now gone on to become commanding officer of the Albury-Wodonga 412 Squadron Australian Air Force Cadets.
“I am in charge of 101 cadets from all over the region,” he said.
The Border movement is the largest airforce cadet unit in Victoria.
“It’s a great unit to be a part of and teaches valuable life skills, leadership and confidence,” Mr Salmon said.
“I remember thinking I would do the cadet thing for a year and then leave but after 12 months they couldn’t get rid of me; I have been hooked ever since.”
Mr Salmon’s involvement in the community also spans to the cricket field where he has been treasurer of St Patrick’s Cricket Club since 1994 and a member since 1991.
