A VETERAN Labor party official says at least two people have put their hand up to run in Indi, but teenage Wodonga councillor Eric Kerr is not one of them.
Zuvele Leschen, who has contested state and federal polls for almost two decades, yesterday said the long-lead time to September 14 would benefit the government.
“More than one person is considering running and they are committed to a long, arduous campaign,” she said.
“The announcement is about getting Tony Abbott to either put up or shut up — to produce some policies.”
Mrs Leschen said she was confident Labor would win but wouldn’t bet on it.
“We have seen a shift in public perception on some policies that had been unpopular,” she said.
“The carbon tax is up and running, the sky didn’t fall in, and we are seeing reductions in emissions.
“The polls are shifting back to Julia Gillard and it is a long, slow drift back to Labor rather than a seismic shift.”
Cr Kerr, a Labor party member and the youngest councillor in Victoria, said he had higher political aspirations but this election was too soon.
