Cops arrest copper thief

10.20AM: A MAN has been arrested attempting to carry valuable copper pipe from a Wangaratta building site.

Police picked up the Melbourne man on Newman Street late on Wednesday night after receiving a tip off.

He will be taken to Wodonga police station today.

Constable Scott Bradley from Wangaratta police said the Melbourne man, 50, was looking for a way to transport the pipe before he was caught.

“He didn’t have a car but he was looking for a way to transport (the copper),” Constable Bradley said.

“It would have quite heavy.”

The man has been charged with trespassing and theft.
