Car rolls, slams into tree

A WOMAN was flown to a Melbourne hospital with serious injuries after a collision near Wangaratta yesterday.

Police said the woman, believed to be in her 50s, was driving on the Beechworth-Wangaratta Road when her car rolled and crashed into a tree about 6pm at Everton, about 20 kilometres from Wangaratta.

It is understood she was trapped in the car for about an hour before she was freed by SES and CFA crews.

The car hit the tree on the driver’s side and emergency services had to drag the car away from the tree to reach the woman.

An Ambulance Victoria helicopter arrived on scene, landing in a paddock nearby.

The woman was taken in an ambulance to the helicopter and the helicopter left for a Melbourne hospital, just before 7.30pm.

Police said she had suffered serious, but not life-threatening injuries.

They said no other cars were involved.

Police were unsure last night of where the woman was from and were investigating the cause of the crash.
